It's been my privilege to serve

People have asked me why I'm passionate about serving in the community.

When I was a teenager, we didn't have as many options as we do today with technology. I spent my leisure time playing basketball, street soccer, and Chinese chess with friends my age and the elderly people in my neighborhood. Most activities took place in the community center and HDB void deck.

I enjoyed the kampong spirit, which is why I started serving in various community groups. I took on different roles and served in different capacities in the Youth Executive Committee and Resident Committee. Over the years, we organized community events, neighborhood watch groups, block parties, house visits, emergency preparedness, and festive celebrations. Our common objective was to promote racial harmony and togetherness among residents.

In Marine Parade, ESM Goh has implemented many hardware, software, and most importantly, the "Heartware" of love and respect. We are fortunate to have the best "Heart Specialist," Dr. Tan, making Marine Parade the best kampong to live on this island.

I'm honored to receive the long service award from ESM Goh and Dr. Tan. Two decades of service, and I'm grateful for the unwavering support from my wife.

I've learned the 5Gs of community service: Giving to the needy, Being gracious with feedback, Being genuine with emotions, Being grateful for friendship, and Striving for growth for the future.

Thank you, People's Association and Marine Parade. It's been my privilege to serve.
